Ann Arbor, Michigan – Detroit City FC closed out its USL W League regular season with a dominant and empathic 3-0 win on the road to AFC Ann Arbor. This win sees Le Rouge end the USL W League regular season with an undefeated record of 10-2-0, good for 32 points.
From the off, Le Rouge dominated the channels out wide and looked to work the ball inside to forwards Joyelle Washington and Lily Jeakle. This style of play resulted in a few half-chances from Washington early on.
Despite this, AFC Ann Arbor managed to create a few moments of their own but struggled to get shots off but their failure to score allowed Le Rouge to grow in confidence and push their backline deeper and deeper into their own half.
In the 27th minute, a well swung-in corner found the head of Acadia Murphy who made no mistake and gave Detroit City a deserved 1-0 lead. This lead was carried into the half after a few switches from AFC Ann Arbor kept Le Rouge at bay for the final 20 minutes of the opening 45’.
Detroit City FC came out more intensely, coming closer to doubling their lead on multiple occasions on the other side of halftime.
This would culminate in a 77th-minute strike from Lily Jeakle, who was played in behind the Ann Arbor backline with a brilliant ball from deep from Ella Offer. Jeakle took her first touch, muscled off a defender, and slotted it home to make it 2-0.
As the match entered second-half stoppage time, Kayla Addison latched onto a through ball from Jeakle and finished into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 Detroit City.
Le Rouge had their host bid for the USL W League Central Conference Playoffs accepted, as announced at the end of the match on Sunday, with Detroit City to welcome River Light FC to Keyworth Stadium in the Semifinals on Friday.
Playoff tickets go on sale on Monday, July 1 at Noon.
