Detroit City FC powered past future National Independent Soccer Association (NISA) opponent Philadelphia Fury, 1-0, on Saturday night at Keyworth Stadium in front of 5,859 fans.
The exhibition match saw plenty of chances for the Boys in Rouge, but it was Man of the Match Ryan Peterson’s penalty in the 63rd minute that made the difference.
Peterson, who made his fifth appearance of 2019, was tripped up by Philadelphia goalkeeper Aidan Hogan as he found himself alone inside the box. Peterson stepped up to take the penalty, and he calmly slotted it home to make it 1-0.
Philadelphia earned a penalty of its own in the 69th minute, after defender Tendai Jirira was called for a handball at the edge of the City 18-yard box. City goalkeeper Armando Quezeda, who replaced Cristian Blanco at halftime, came up with a huge save on Ian McGrath’s penalty down the middle, and Quezeda also came up with the rebound after.
Both Quezeda and Blanco were making their City debuts in net.
Detroit City FC returns to action next Saturday at Keyworth Stadium against Liga MX side Atlas FC. The international friendly is presented by DTE Energy. Tickets for the marquee match are still available at tickets.https://www.detcityfc.com.
