The stage is set for Detroit City FC’s second appearance in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament.
Le Rouge is set to face the Michigan Bucks (PDL) at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13 at Ultimate Soccer Arenas. This marks the first meeting between the in-state clubs.
This is the second-straight year Detroit City will represent the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) in the nation’s oldest tournament competition. City fell in last year’s first-round match at the hands of Chicago-based club, RWB Adria. The match on May 8, 2014, saw Adria score a goal in the last minute of stoppage time, which led to a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation. After a back and forth affair in an extra-time session that saw three red cards between both teams, City lost in penalty kicks, 3-1.
“This match has been a long time coming, and the owners are as excited as everyone else in the soccer community that it’s finally going to happen,” co-owner Alex Wright said. “The Bucks are great at collecting talent, and it will be a match to remember. Our team is looking forward to joining our supporters in Pontiac to represent the city of Detroit.”
Detroit joins 12 other NPSL clubs in the 102nd edition of the tournament, with a record 91 United States Soccer Federation affiliated teams from across all divisions participating in total.
The Michigan Bucks, a Premier Development League club based in Pontiac, MI., won the PDL National Championship in 2014.
The winner of the Detroit City FC vs Michigan Bucks first-round matchup will face Portland Timbers 2 of the United Soccer League (USL).
