HAMTRAMCK, MI (June 26, 2021) – The Detroit City FC U-23 side continued their MWPL campaign back at Keyworth Stadium where they would dominate cross-city rival Inter Detroit 3-0.
Detroit City started the game off strong with a high press that confused and frustrated Inter Detroit’s cohesion as a squad. With constant pressure from #9 Zion Beaton and #15 Kellan Landefield, Inter could not find their rhythm as a unit, which resulted in many DCFC chances early on.
Just moments after the goal, Beaton caused yet another turnover and found himself on a breakaway with the Inter goalkeeper, but his attempt would be saved.
After the pressure resulted in an Inter turnover, Beaton found himself on a two on two break with fellow midfielder Landefeld. Beaton would play a perfect ball to the feet of Landefeld who found the bottom right corner of the net to put DCFC up 1-0.
Le Rouge kept their pressure high which resulted in a dominant first-half performance. The key aspect of Detroit City was to dominate the ball and possession in the midfield and find open players making runs. Not only did DCFC dominate the possession, but the Le Rouge men also had a total of 11 shots to keep Inter Detroit on their toes. #99 Wasseem Muthana had many chances from these forward runs; however, his attempts would come empty-handed.
DCFC started the second exactly how they started the first half as they continued to keep their high press into full effect. After a hard foul just outside of the box, #7 Bosh Tanyi scored an incredible freekick that went around the wall and into the bottom right corner. From there, Detroit City continued to dominate the ball and possession.
With another Inter Detroit turnover in a dangerous area, Landefeld and Tanyi would link up for an impressive goal from Landefeld as he drilled the shot to the top right corner just over the goalkeeper’s hand. Detroit City kept the gas rolling as Landefeld would return the favor to Tanyi as Tanyi scored his second goal of the game from the penalty area.
Kellan Landefeld would earn the Google Fi Man of the Match award for his two-goal and one assist effort. However, even though his effort would appear on the stat sheet, he did many things that do not, such as keeping up constant pressure and finding open teammates on the run.
