DETROIT — Detroit City FC has announced its next International Friendly, with six-time Liga MX Champions Club Santos Laguna coming to Keyworth Stadium on June 25 at 7 p.m. ET. The match will be the tenth international friendly in club history, most recently welcoming Club Universidad Nacional, better known as Pumas, of Liga MX to Keyworth Stadium in 2024. Ideal Group Detroit is a supporting partner of the 2025 International Friendly at Keyworth Stadium.
Club Santos Laguna was founded in 1983 but was initially called Club Santos IMSS Laguna, as the Mexican Social Security Institute of Durango founded it. In 1984, they changed their name to Santos Laguna, which is how they are known today. They have over 4,000,000 followers on Social Media and a fanbase that extends across the world.
Santos Laguna has won the Liga MX on six occasions, first in 1996 and most recently in 2018. In 2021, Santos Laguna finished as runners-up to Cruz Azul. On the international stage, Club Santos Laguna finished as runners-up in the CONCACAF Champions League twice in 2011-12 and 2012-13.
Club Santos Laguna calls the Estadio Corona home. It has a capacity of 30,050 and opened in November 2009 after construction began in February 2008. The club was originally based in Santa Cruz, Tlaxcala, but it now plays in Torreón, Coahuila, where it has been since 1988.
In December 2010, it was announced that Santos Laguna would partner with Celtic of the Scottish Premiership. The two clubs remain close to this day, and both wear green-and-white hooped kits.
Detroit City FC’s first International Friendly came back in 2016 when FC United of Manchester visited Keyworth Stadium. Since then, Le Rouge has welcomed Glentoran FC (2017), Venezia FC (2017), FC St. Pauli (2018), Club Necaxa (2018), Frosinone Calcio (2018), FC Juárez (2019), Club Atlas (2019), and Pumas UNAM (2024). Santos Laguna will be the fifth club from Liga MX to face off against Detroit City FC at Keyworth Stadium.
